I totally agree with what Savia is saying in her blog post. If media tries then it can prove to be a big source of motivation for those who are willing to do something about major problems we see, hear and read everyday. Government has already initiated involvement into media by giving out pubic announcements more often and is also constantly working towards designing new concepts like Bhagidari.

I personally think that Indian media needs to get more organized and needs to increase social contribution to what there is at the moment. If I read a news today in a newspaper it is quite hard to get further follow ups of what happened after that. I think if media reports a crime or an event then it is equally responsible to educate people with what is happening then after.

As Savia said in her blog post that she sees very few positive stories. I might not have as in depth knowledge of media as she does but I would like to express my views. In my view over a period of time Indian media to be more specific has evolved as a commercial body which is serving that sells. I would also like to quote an incident which really made me feel sad about attitude that Indian media holds. On 23rd July 2006 I has participated in a peace march as an appeal for justice to Priyadarshini and the same day happened to be one of the most biggest events in India, Prince fell in a deep irrigation shaft. When I returned from the march I turned on my television to see how media is contributing to the efforts taken by so many people today. And to my surprise all the news was taken off from almost all the leading news channels as they were busy covering rescue mission of Prince live with commentary, right from providing him with food, oxygen and to how he was killing an insect inside or how his birthday was celebrated followed by the rescue.

Mr Hooda wished a happy birthday to Prince, and shared a cake with him. He also announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh to the family of Prince and Rs 51,000 each to all those who went in the tunnel to rescue the child of an agriculture labourer.

I do appreciate the efforts taken by media for getting help and as without their efforts I doubt Government would have taken drastic steps like assigning this work to National Defense Forces as it happens to be I doubt even if India has any well trained rescue team for such situations. Needn’t be said it is quite clear how Indian news channels tried their best to encase the live action and at the same time compromising the basics.

Now or then there are new special editions being introduced to the news papers which focuses on what is going on in city, women stuff, home stuff etc. And I hope that some news paper guy actually reads what I am writing here and consider it as a suggestion to start a supplement that motivates, appreciates and reports what might not sell but will contribute to the society of which we all are part of.

And yes after reading Savia’s blog post I am definitely going to watch Blood Diamond very soon.

These days we see a lot of websites which have disabled right click for so called security reasons. I am using Mozilla Firefox and have spell check installed. I was writing an email to my bank’s branch manager and wanted to correct a misspelled word but when I right clicked the incorrect word to see the suggestion. I got a message in a browser alert:

Due to security reasons, Right click is not allowed

It can really be a big pain if someone wants to paste a message or a transaction number or correct a misspelled word like in my case. So I figured out a work around. Lets see how the right click is disabled at the first place:

<script>

    document.oncontextmenu=function(){

        // Add alert or notification

        return false; // Cancel the event chain

    }

</script>

The piece of code above will block the context menu event with a custom function that is usually used to give an alert like I got on my Bank’s website. And false value is returned so that the event chain is stopped and context menu is not displayed.

Now to enable the context menu again we will have to remove this method that is blocking the context menu functionality of a web page. For this we can reassign the context menu event with a null value or we can assign a method that returns a true value so that the event chain is not blocked or stopped or interrupted.

We can also use javascript protocol of our browsers to add the javascript to enable right click to our bookmarks or enable right click via address bar. Here is how we can do this:

javascript:void(document.oncontextmenu=null)

Click here to "disable" right click context menu on this page

Click here to "enable" back the right click context menu on this page

Are we missing on the daily dose of news about students giving their lives away by surrendering in front of pressure to perform better and excel in such a competitive world of education in India. It seems yes and that we want children of India to suffer in traumatic situations. Indian’s need to accept that no scale is perfect to measure one’s ability to perform well in life. Great emphasis is already been given to academic performance which leaves students in a feeling of grief with average performance but with possible excellent skills out side the limits of what any academic system can measure or identify.

There are several unanswered questions to which Indian society must address before more students are sacrificed. Failure is never considered an option and is treated as a shameful situation and average performance is never being appreciated.

Such kind of an attitude makes us the Indians develop a conservative mentality which limits us to a scope or a horizon that is presented to us. Fear of failure has made us insecure and has reduced our risk taking capabilities, hence closing down several doors of opportunities which would definitely help India progress and provide a sense of satisfaction. When alternatives will be given a chance and a consideration, that will be a day when Indians will not give up their lives to a mere failure or to even the fear of facing one.

My girlfriend studying in Germany got a Tevion 85572 webcam as her christmas present. After installing it and hours of struggle no one could make it to work with any of the VOIP messengers that also supports video streaming. Quite surprisingly video from the webcam could be seen with the software provided along but nothing could be seen on Yahoo or Skype webcam window.

We had to just leave it like that as we were not willing to waste anymore of our time. Few months later we tried to fix it again and almost after a hour it just clicked my mind and yes that is where the problem was.

It was quite obvious and at the same time also surprising that neither Yahoo messenger nor Skype messenger could detect the problem and suggest a solution.

Here is what the problem was:

The webcam software started as soon as a webcam was detected.

Any webcam can only be used with one software at a time.

The webcam worked as soon as software using it was been closed.

A yet another wardrobe malfunction at Wills India Fashion Week has left the fashion freaks astonished. In Rajesh Pratap’s fashion show while he himself was in Paris, Debby a Belgian model slipped off her dress accidentally on ramp which left her partially top less. Of course as soon as Debby realized she adjusted her dress back and continued with her ramp trip. Lack of time for fitting between fashion shows is said to be the whole and sole reason for such slips on ramp.

Sex starved Indian media immediately picked up and a censored version of the fashion show started floating across all the major news channels. Where sex education is considered as an attempt of introducing pornography in schools, such kind of incidents in fashion shows are going to sell like hot cakes.

More often considered as a popularity gimmick it rather brings embarrassment to the fashion designer for unreliability. And this incident seems to be adding to India’s own history of wardrobe malfunctions following two incidents in Lakme India Fashion Week with fashion model Carol Gracious and Gauhar Khan.

Few days ago my current Ruby on Rails project was been moved to a staging server with similar configuration of the live web site. Suddenly yesterday in one of the administration modules I started getting the following error:

Mysql::Error: Incorrect key file for table ‘/tmp/#sql_61a9_0.MYI’;
try to repair it

After searching about it on Google I landed to a Mysql bug page. I tried several things to fix this issue like:

Running repair command on tables

Importing a working copy from live server

Recreating the database with the working data

Switching over to a different database

Tested locally with the database having issue

But nothing worked, so today I wrote to Rimu hosting’s tech support explaining about the problem.

I received a response within half hour and I really do appreciate their promptness. This pointed me into the right direction that the issue was not with MySQL but due to the fact that there was no disk space available on server.

[root@xxxxxxx ~]# df -H
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/xvda1             4.3G   4.3G   512k 100% /

Tada the problem was gone after freeing up some space on the server

Its obvious to get confused after seeing this banner. Kamasutra one of the leading Indian manufacturers of condoms and known for the same around the world has introduced a new range of personal care for both men and women.

Tag line here "I let my daughter wear Kamasutra" appears to be a very well planned pitch for introducing Kamasutra into an all new domain. At present Kamasutra has released a range of deodorants and after shave lotions. Products are been named very carefully keeping the brand image in consideration like KamaSutra Spark, KamaSutra Urge, KamaSutra Dare, KamaSutra Provoke and KamaSutra Intention.

Quite similarly an advertisement of undergarment company Amul became very popular where a woman is washing her husband’s underwear with really stunning expressions. Read more

As of now this fabulous concept of promoting personal care range products is limited to only movie halls, and few public places to target only well educated broadminded audience to avoid any misinterpretation of the message that is intended to be delivered. Good amount of online promotion is made on the web site by putting banner ads and showcasing all the personal care range products along with their details.

Kamasutra must have made many turned on by there late night TV advertisements and now with a difference Kamasutra is making people curious. And that is what seems to be the motive behind coming up with such a concept for promotion of the Kamasutra personal care range.

There are several online advertising agencies which serves advertisements on web sites. And the advertiser is charged for clicks being made on the ad, out of the amount charged a portion of it is given to the web site owner displaying those ads. More commonly know as concept of PPC (Pay Per Click).

Few smart pants have came up with a new way to fool around with online advertising agency. That is by giving away direct contact details which would not require clicking the ad. Like in the banner ad as displayed below the company is asking the viewer to send an SMS to them, the viewer will almost never click the advertisement. Leaving the advertisement agency and the web site displaying the ad been misused.

On the another hand the company who is interested in generating leads for their business is getting quality leads as the viewer will be spending money to send SMS and is more likely to be serious. At the same time also saving money as rarely there will be clicks on the advertisement which they are displaying on Internet.

Quite possibly due to advertising agency policies the advertiser had to add a text "To know more click here". But in the banner below which is exactly the size as it appeared, one can never make out its written at bottom right corner without using a magnifying lens. It seems more like "Terms and conditions apply".

For big companies if they are concerned of tracking the source of leads been generated then they might use a different channel for example a different number where the requests will be received.

Now the concern over here here is less about not getting paid for the advertisements but about displaying them for free. More importantly how online advertising industry is going to deal with such problems.

Orkut in its initial days used to give several exceptions or errors now and then, which has really improved over the course of time. Being Orkut in beta version, few errors in a long lost while are quite acceptable. But shouldn’t Orkut be concentrating on making things more stable before adding more new features, provided that the new feature have improved user experience a lot.

Orkut uses Ajax very extensively even for places where it may be avoided, this is quite different from other Google services. For example when sending a scrap to someone on Orkut, first it is send using an Ajax request and then the page is reloaded. Its hard to make out the reason or purpose for this approach. But this makes sense entirely when replying to a scraps received by clicking the reply link which expands a form below the scrap and goes away after the scrap is send without reloading page.

Now a real dead end situation is when an exception or error takes place while processing an Ajax request. To surprise Orkut seems like not to be handling exceptions or errors which takes place while processing an Ajax request. User will keep pressing the post scrap button again and again as nothing happens but no message is shown, leaving the end user clue less of what happened.

This problem cannot be diagnosed unless special tools are used to study the Ajax requests and their response. After using a very popular tool used by web developers called Firebug for Firefox, failed Ajax requests can be seen very clearly.

On further investigating the issue, the response received was in HTML which looked like in the image above and the message contained was:

We did not understand your last request. Please go back and try again. You may also need to re-login, if this error persists.

This is exactly the response end user would see normally that is received in response to Ajax request due to some exception or an error.

After the scrapbook was reloaded this problem was solved.

PS: I have already reported this issue to Orkut with issue# 227669358

One of them is the jingle, the catchy background music of an advertisement. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has released a new advertisement featuring background music from a very popular Indian Sufi singer Kailash Kher.

While going through an article about the same I came across really interesting facts and aspects. Like Ruby on Rails identity was community funded. Undoubtedly DHH is responsible for the heights to which Ruby on Rails have reached today.

As a matter of fact on the Ruby on Rails official web site a copyrights message can also be found stating:

"Rails", "Ruby on Rails", and the Rails logo are trademarks of
David Heinemeier Hansson. All rights reserved.

Ruby on Rails I believe is one of the most successful open source projects ever and that is because of its policies especially for contribution. Rails source code is available under MIT license but the Rails identity is covered by trade mark rights. Basically a trade mark is used for a lot different purpose and it is really debatable if Rails identity should be covered under a trade mark policy or not. A trade mark is used in trade of goods to indicate and distinguish source.

Around the world already there is lot of confusion going on about trade mark for open source projects for example for overcoming Linux sub licensing and trade marking problem an entirely new concept of Linux mark was coined.

Rails is neither a product or a service its just an open source project, at least that is what everyone thinks of it, not sure about DHH. So how can one obtain trade mark or service mark for Rails. If to DHH believe, source of Rails is of himself as the usage rights remains with him and he is just sharing a few rights with others, then are all the Rails contributors crazy to be contributing in the Rails framework so that it can be distinguished as a DHH thing. Does DHH wants the world to work for him for free and yeah he doesn’t owe us a shit!!

Under very uncertain and unexpected situation I was in a grave need of sending some money within India. Now the fine print is that the recipient don’t have any bank account. I started to explore options to be able to send money as soon as possible without any bank account and a scene from a movie came in my mind where the main actress Katrina Kaif receives money from London, England instantly in Punjab, India via Western Union Money transfer. I never thought before that movies can also be of some good help when you need advice. Well absolutely that scene from the movie Namaste London meant exactly what was shown, I can very well transfer the money to India, had it been I was in England or for that matter of fact any other place except India where Western Union Money transfer have agents. I scanned their entire web site to make sure that I could send money within India.

I could find several agents in India, in-fact remotest of the places were being covered including where I wanted to send money and I really do appreciate that. I called up one of the agents and enquired about sending money and oops, money can only be received in India whereas sending money from India to any where is not possible. To avoid any chances of confusion I even confirmed the same with the customer care by sending them an email. Quite surprisingly Western Union Money transfer took more than 24 hours in responding to my very simple query. And not just the customer support response time was slow, I even had the same experience with Western Union Money transfer web site, that might be temporary but it was quite sluggish.

I am really not sure about the reason behind this, even after having such a well established network of agents, why Western Union Money transfer is restricted to only incoming transfers for India. A possible reason could be the benefits of receiving funds in foreign currency or may be Reserve Bank of India regulations.

Now the next thing that clicked my mind was the traditional Indian postal department service of money order. Quite surprisingly I have never had any personal experience of this service, there was never a need before. No prize for guessing where I came to know about this money order thing, tada movies again. Reason why I said money order service of Indian postal department quite old and traditional is that the movies in which I saw people using money orders were really old ones. And provided the reputation of Indian postal department I moved to private shipping services long time ago.

Just to give it a try I went to Indian postal department web site and bingo, on the home page itself I could see a link for Instant Money Order service. In a fraction of second my point of view for Indian postal services changed to a lot better position. Now I was trying to figure out if I can use this service myself. No doubt that Indian postal department web site sucks, a really huge page loaded after taking hell lot of time. Grrrr Instant Money Order service is not available where I wanted to send money, anyhow the service still sounded quite appealing to me.

After placing request for an Instant Money Order a secret number is provided that you need to convey to the recipient and just by telling that number and showing a identity card, money can be transferred instantly to any of the Instant Money Order supported post offices.

It is quite disappointing that even after having so well rooted infrastructure of decades old Indian postal department still don’t have all the services available across all the post offices in India. I tried for all the next best possible options for me, telegraphic money order is being discontinued but is still promoted on the web site, speed post also is not available in all locations. Hence only and the last option left was normal money order service that might take up to a week’s time.

Another very big reason why I never used any of the Indian postal department services was their working hours. Usually most of the post office closes down early in evening and that too depends where it is, few of them even close down as soon as afternoon. Its really hard to leave work at job behind and make trips to the post office cause you are never sure if you will get it right the first time you will go there. But now due to competition from private shipping services the main post office of major cities are kept open till 8 in the night that makes the main post offices also known as GPO (General Post Office) working hours from 10 AM to 8 PM.

I did go to the main post office in Delhi before 8 PM but surprisingly what I came to know was that money orders can only be made till 4 PM after which speed post and postal services are only available.

Now today when I went again to the main post office of Delhi I was able to send the money order and as a coincidence I saw a man possibly not from India receiving Western Union Money transfer at the post office. It is undoubtedly a very powerful combination of Western Union Money transfer quality and well rooted infrastructure of Indian postal department. Not just that, Western Union Money transfer even have collaborated with several national banks and their branches across India.

In the end all I hope for is that the money order reaches its destination soon without any exceptions. I also do appreciate the efforts Indian postal department is taking to attract more customers by providing international level modern services with expectedly improving standard of quality.

So the moral of the story is that movies are not reality, there is lot more beyond what can be seen.

PS: Yes that was quite a fancy moral but what actually I wanted to tell was that even being India one of the most biggest / powerful nations there are still times when one has to compromise for the least best option.

In my very first project with Ruby on Rails several months ago I almost freaked out finding a better way for displaying a flash message for the same request and rendering an action instead of redirecting it elsewhere.

For those who are not aware about the flash message concept of Rails framework. There are times when we wish to show message to the user after processing his request say for an example if the user had entered incorrect username or password then we tell him ‘The entered username or password is incorrect please try again‘. So we just need to assign our "cool" message to a key in flash hash like flash[:notice] = "my really cool message" and in our layout that we use for our application we keep a place to display the message stored in flash[:notice].

In Rails there are two things render and redirect, redirect does as it sounds, it redirects the current request to some another action and render uses the same request and executes a different action instead of the one it was intended for or the one intended in a case where there is no redirect or render.

The flash hash is volatile in nature and its default implementation is intended to be used with redirect. As soon as the next request is served the flash hash is flushed and so is the message stored in flash[:notice] is gone.

Now in a case where we use redirect like if we do the authentication in login action and lets application render the login action in the same request authentication took place. The message will be displayed if the authentication failed else we would redirect the user to his secret place having passed the authentication. But after a failed authentication request the message is not gone as a new request was not being served using redirect. Now if the user passes the authentication he will be taken to his secret place but the message is being retained in notice key of flash hash as it is being designed to, same will be the case if users navigates to some another part of application by clicking some link. Our "cool" message will be shown to the user in his secret place or any where he may go on his next request. Ouch that is what we were not willing to do.

So the solution for this is to assign our "cool" message to flash.now[:notice] instead of flash[:notice] well sounds quite obvious, isn’t Rails framework very human friendly. Using flash.now[:notice] will not retain the message for next request and flash[:notice] will have the message preserved for the current request it wont be available there after.

Internet Email spamming is highly uncontrollable even after huge efforts around the world. Recently I received an email in my Gmail INBOX and wondering how a spam email has came in my inbox I checked it:

Increase your Size
famish grin lair

The link in this message is of Google search that tries to look for "anherbal" inside URLs and by using I am Feeling Lucky feature clicking on this link will take you to the first web site that comes in search result without any confirmation.

So you really don’t know where this link is going to take you!!

And on top of that this email lands in your inbox.

This is quite a vulnerability of Google search feature called "I am feeling lucky".

Hence may be Google should validate requests for the use of I am feeling lucky feature.

These days I am making an application using Active Scaffold.

I needed to have reordering functionality in my application and found a plugin for the same called "active_scaffold_acts_as_list". Getting it to work was really a tricky part. I kept on getting errors while starting my server:

/vendor/plugins/active_scaffold_acts_as_list/init.rb:5:in
`load’: wrong number of arguments (1 for 0) (ArgumentError)

After trying to look for a solution to this I first tried changing load with require and now I was getting a new error:

/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/core_ext/module/aliasing.rb:
31:in `alias_method’: undefined method `template_search_path’
for class `Class’(NameError)

I was in doubt of this new problem being coming due to using require hence I tried looking for why load was not working and found that Rails::Plugin::Loader has already defined load method so a way to over come that was to use:

Kernel::load ‘config/core.rb’

I tried several things and thought that may be Active Scaffold was not getting loaded before active_scaffold_acts_as_list hence I tried to find out about the new feature I had heard recently in Rails on edge for specifying order or sequence for loading plguins.

I found a very useful article and even went through change logs on Rails trac after which I made changes to my environment.rb accordingly. But hard luck again it dint work

So I finally I went to Active Scaffold Google group and searched the discussion forum and found a thread that saved my life

It was more of a patch for fixing the exact problem I was facing and I followed what was suggested and viola now its working!!

I am working on a new Rails project these days and I was being asked to cache all the static pages displaying site’s static content. All the content was coming from one controller but I went crazy about implementing page caching by using caches_page, what I wanted to do was cache all the page in one go. Syntax for caching one or more pages is:

class WeblogController < ActionController::Base

caches_page :show, :new

end

Now it is really a bad idea to go about writing all the content page names to ensure that they are cached. Even after looking for a solution to this on Internet I was unable to work out anything un-till I landed on a blog which was talking about a similar kind of problem. In responses to that post I finally found the solution:

after_filter lambda { |c| c.cache_page }, :except => [:show]

You are basically required to add a after filter to your controller of which you wish to cache all the pages, inside the except configuration you can specify the names of actions which you don’t want to be cached. So in short this works exactly the opposite of caches_page syntax.

May be about a month ago I was talking with Sid about buying a cycle so that I could go to metro station on that. Actually metro station is quite near by from my house but still I am required to travel a little. It consumes a quite much time waiting for a bus to come. Apart from that it is also a good way of keeping my self active along with keeping the environment healthy.

I tried enquiring about parking a bicycle at the metro station but the person over there was himself not clear like what would be the charges and stuff. I got busy again with normal routine and forgot about this idea that I came up with, till a few days ago I noticed a banner at a station telling that bicycle parking is free of cost at the stations as an effort towards reducing pollution in Delhi.

Quite impressive but we are still behind as in several countries people are allowed to take their bicycle with them inside the train. For example in Germany trains have special cars for people who wish to travel with their bicycles. Well for that matter they even have cars for smokers and for those who don’t smoke at all.

Anyhow it is really appreciable that at least someone has started looking towards preserving environment as well. Though I really doubt how many people are going to switch to bicycles but at least they have a reason for it now.

Few months ago Manik suggested me to read about Scrum to see how we can implement it in our organization and prepare a presentation for everyone. I started reading book by Ken Schwaber called ‘Agile Project Management with Scrum’ based on which I developed an understanding for Scrum.

Basically Scrum is a simple approach towards managing complex projects that focuses on early returns with iterative process model and provides high level of flexibility but with few rules that must be followed. Read more

I gave a presentation to everyone, though I am not sure about how much my presentation helped others but I was sure about one thing, that a clear understanding about Scrum and confidence on it can only be gained by practicing it. To be very honest even after reading the book I was not feeling confident enough while presenting Scrum because convincing others to something I have myself never experienced was really something new to me.

Just by chance one day I came to know about scrum society called ‘Scrum Alliance‘ they were providing training on Scrum and that too by well known certified Scrum trainers. Sounds interesting, I told Manik about it and he was also very keen on getting me trained in Scrum. Unfortunately the next Scrum training session was quite far.

We started to implement Scrum with basic activities like daily standup meetings. I was not playing much of role in implementing Scrum but I was finding it really interesting to see others so excited.

As I kept on checking the Scrum Alliance website regularly for updates I noticed that there was an upcoming Scrum training session in Delhi. As I told about this to Manik, he agreed on sending me there.

The training took place at InterContinental Delhi and it was for two days. I really enjoyed the training by Pete Deemer who also co-leads Yahoo!’s large-scale corporate adoption of Scrum. The training was not just talking and talking but it also included exercise to give us better understanding of Scrum. Discussions with other people attending training and Pete were really amazing.

After the training I developed confidence in Scrum and was clear about what Scrum actually is. I am really thankful to Vinsol for giving me this opportunity and making me a CSM (Certified Scrum Master).

Out of blues I thought of reading news paper today and was bit surprised to see that an advertisement which used to come on television of Amul undergarments is being taken of the air by I&B (Information and Broadcasting) ministry. They have stated the advertisement to be vulgar and indecent. I obviously used to find it quite strange when ever I saw this advertisement on television, more over I was even more stunned when I saw posters of the same advertisements on Patel Nagar metro station and at few other as well. Delhi metro is Government governed it self and when they are banning this advertisement on television channels and giving them a piece of advise to be careful while choosing what to air, I really don’t understand what do they have to say about them self being promoting such a vulgar/indecent campaign. Though the posters at stations dint had much of so called vulgar element as found by I&B ministry but it definitely relates indirectly to the same campaign.

When I first saw the advertisement at the station I thought of taking a snap of it for my blog but I dint as I was in hurry, after reading the article in paper I decided to do it but then it was late the poster was being removed from Patel Nagar station and I could not find it at any other station as I kept looking from it while going back home. Anyways on searching the Internet I could find few other people also talking about the posters on metro stations of this campaign.

I find it really interesting that now ASCI (Advertising Standards Councils of India) has given this advertisement a clean chit as they dint found it to be obscene.

While reading review on mouthsut of this advertisement I came across a reader’s comment saying that I was clueless when my niece - 9 year old - asked me ’’what is she doing?’’. Similar would have been my situation if I would have been at his place. I personally find it a very cheap concept of promoting an undergarment and it is really not going to target educated audience just by adding a line in English at end of the advertisement saying ‘Crafted for Fantasies’.

May be issue is actually not with the advertisement but with the way campaign is being designed like it should have been designed in a way campaigns for condoms like Kamasutra etc is being designed. For example I usually don’t see advertisements of condoms coming up in day time at least on any of the family channels or news channels. But I really don’t think that the people manging this campaign would be interested in this idea as they are already planning to air this advertisement on Doordarshan and already working on a sequel as well.

While coming back from office I got down at Uttam Nagar East Metro station and noticed that there were few kids sliding on the slope built for escalator. I quickly went to the nearest security official on duty and requested him to stop those kids as someone could get hurt. In response he said, (”marta bhi toh nahi hai koi, tabhi manenge yeh”) why don’t one of them die only then they will stop. I could make out that this man is not going to help so I went to customer care center and informed them about the same, all he could do was suggest me to contact security officials around. I finally went to another security official and asked him to stop the kids, he said to me that he would do the needful. Keeping his words I left from the station.

While travelling back from Ajmer in train I thought of reading newspaper out of the blues, and I found the article attached with this post. I was shocked and filled with grief for myself. All I could think was if I would have filed a complaint that day then this might not have happened or those responsible for this would get punished.

Indians have a very peculiar quality of forgetting things easily and I am quite sure same would have happened in this case as well. Officials at DMRC have easily stated this as an accident where as they are the ones who were responsible like how can this happen even when they claim to have covered every corner of metro stations with surveillance cameras.

I send email telling about this to all my friends, contacts and even Hindustan times but nothing could be done.

I am currently working at Vinsol (Vinayak Solutions Pvt. Ltd.) and I would like to share my experience that I had with my colleagues while developing Travel Mate.

All of us work like a team and it was really enjoyable to talk with others and get their views, I can still remember Gaurav telling me again and again to make the widget look more prettier and he actually did wanted to help me by making the design. But unfortunately I could not manage to have it in the first release.

And yes I don’t even remember how many times Sid would have told me about increasing the size of widget so that he could see the map properly.

Then Rishav, he actually did serious stress testing of my widget, may be for fun so that he could tease me, but that really helped. Thanks to his testing that I added rounding off in currency converter.

Everyone constant feedback really helped me make Travel Mate a highly user friendly widget.

Thanks to all of you

I faced this problem while implementing Google maps in Travel Mate that is, if I would click on the map and try to drag it to view other areas on map it would move the entire widget. Seems like this is a property of widget that if we try to click any where on the widget and drag it then it moves the entire widget.

So I after searching on internet the solution I found is:

#mapContainer {
/* This required to stop the widget from dragging while the user tries to drag the map */
-apple-dashboard-region:dashboard-region(control rectangle 0px 0px 0px 0px);
}

The web pages I found useful are:
http://widgets.opera.com/widget/5982 (In comments)
Actual Documentation From Apple Dashboard

There are times when I find my self powerless and helpless. There are boundaries around that I am not able to cross even when I am willing to. So much needs to be done and there are so many who are looking towards me as someone in a better position then what they are but all I am able to do is turn my face away and just feel guilty of not being able to do anything. No one in this world is born with a responsibility and actually responsibility is something that can only be take when you find your self responsible for it or answerable.

With a limited point of view the responsibilities are restricted to a radius but the question that arises is when we will be able to come out of this limited point of view and start feeling our self responsible to the extent of horizon.

Its easy to earn money, yes it is, its easy to live a happily, yes it is, its easy to live for your self and its not hard to live for others or is it. This small feeling, this thought, this approach is missing from most of our lives.

Why are we scared of losing something that is already getting lost by every second and why are we trying to preserve something that we are not sure for how long we can hold it.

There is a great saying that, live the life as it is the last moment to live. When we hear this the first thing that would come to our minds would be something that can give us joy, enjoyment, happiness. By the way who defined joy, who defined enjoyment, the answer is quite blunt we don’t know who.

Its quite easy to drink your life as if you are drinking a bottle of beer with every moment we live, may be that is what we call enjoyment, may be that is what gives us happiness. Consider people like Mother Teressa or Mahatma Gandhi, were they from some all different world or from some other planet. Why did they have different meaning for enjoyment, a different meaning of happiness, a different way to celebrate and every moment they lived as if every moment was last moment of their life.

We party and we enjoy, do we ever do it all alone, no I don’t think so. The day we will realise that enjoyment is not in our happiness but in sharing it with others and especially with those who really need it, our would will be a better place to live.

This is something that we not just need to think upon but act upon and the best part is we are not depended on any external things that are not in our control say for an example our governments.

I am not a great person who would have already attained this level in life but really aspire for it and I am trying for it.

Remember friends…

Yesterday I went to Church with a friend of mine and after that I went to his place. There we watched Da Vinci Code together and quite obviously it raised several questions in my mind.

His father is an education counsellor and is just a right person to talk and look for answers. One of the things stated by him really surprised me and helped me understand a fact that most of us have been ignoring, that is “Truth is exclusive”, which means that if anything relating to something is true then anything else is not, for example if I am a boy then definitely I am not a girl, if it is day outside then it cannot be night. More importantly all of us have developed an attitude and believe that truth is not exclusive. We have stopped repenting from things that are wrong, we are loosing our own opinion and building an opinion that suit others.

Truth is exclusive and it is a universal fact that is also an elementary principle for leading a good life.
